Portable air conditioner without a window
A conventional portable AC still needs to reject heat outdoors. Choose your room’s situation to see what to check before buying a unit.

Cooling method
Refrigerated AC and an evaporative cooler do different jobs
A conventional refrigerated portable AC transfers room heat to its exhaust stream. Venting that stream back into the room defeats room cooling. A product with a water tank or ice tray may instead be an evaporative cooler; check its manual rather than relying on the shop category.
Direct evaporative cooling adds moisture and works best in dry climates with suitable fresh-air movement. It is a poor match for a sealed, already humid room. A fan moves air for personal comfort; it does not provide refrigerated cooling.

Check a compatible opening before choosing an appliance
- Identify a real exterior opening and ask whether a compatible manufacturer-supported vent kit can be used. Another indoor room is not outdoors.
- Read the exact model’s hose and opening requirements. Do not extend a hose based on another brand’s general article.
- Check sealing, required clearances, security, drainage and the permitted installation arrangement with the supplier or installer.
- Get property permission where needed before planning permanent changes. A dryer duct, ceiling void or unknown wall opening is not automatically an approved outlet.
No exterior route
Do not buy a conventional portable AC expecting closed-room cooling
If no acceptable outdoor heat path exists, ask the owner or an installer whether a permanent system or a different room is feasible. A mini-split also transfers heat outdoors and needs a proper installation.
In dry conditions an appropriate evaporative cooler may be worth assessing. With no suitable ventilation, or in humid conditions, it is not an equivalent replacement for refrigerated AC. Shading and reducing indoor heat gains can help, but they do not promise a safe indoor temperature in extreme heat.

Self-evaporating does not mean hose-free
Self-evaporating describes how some condensate is handled. It does not remove the need to reject heat outdoors in cooling mode. Humidity and the exact operating mode can still affect drainage requirements.
Use the manual’s cooling-mode installation instructions. Fan-only operation and dry mode are separate modes with their own limits; neither establishes that the appliance can refrigerate a sealed room without an outdoor path.
